The law has never been “good news.” Paul asserts that law and grace are totally incompatible – absolutely contradictory. You may hold one or the other, but you cannot hold both at the same time. It is difficult to comprehend how the intelligent theological mind can nurture such contradiction as “a proper balance of law and grace.” The Apostle Paul rejects the law as a power to save or give life. On the contrary, he says it kills. Those who preach the formula mixture are alternately ministering life, then death to their followers.

Of the treasure committed to Paul no truth is of more importance to the peace of the believer than that of justification. This is preeminently a part of what Paul calls, “my gospel.” The Apostle of the Gentiles fully developed and widely proclaimed the great doctrine of justification by faith. It is the corner-stone of “the mystery of the gospel.” No other apostle or apostolic writer so much as mentions it, save that Luke as the inspired historian tells us how Paul preached it. But Peter and John never get beyond forgiveness of sins. Still there is something far higher than that of mere pardon, and it is of this that Paul delighted to treat.
